Information on Reading First

Reading First is a federally funded program designed to provide the states and districts with the needed assistance to establish research-based reading programs for students in kindergarten through third grade.

The purpose of Reading First is to ensure that all children learn to read well by the end of third grade.
- Many learning problems are the result of students' difficulties with reading.
- Successful readers are better able to reach their academic potential.
- A body of rigorous research has identified the proven methods of early reading instruction.
