English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Overview
The ESOL Program offers comprehensive services to English Language Learners in grades K-12.

English Language Learners (ELLs) can include immigrant and refugee children, adopted and/or foster children of foreign birth living in an English speaking home, children born abroad living with natural parents who speak a language other than English, and children born in this country whose parents maintain the native language in the home.

Services

ESOL instruction is provided by New York State certified ESOL teachers.  Instruction is designed to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through the use of meaningful content and is aligned with New York State Learning Standards.

Design of the service is differentiated according to English proficiency level, age and individual needs and includes selection and adaptation of materials and strategies.

Service delivery is tailored to district needs and includes class and small group instruction and pull-out and push-in models. Ongoing consultation with classroom teachers ensures congruency.

The program provides supervision of teachers and promotes professional development and peer collaboration among ESOL colleagues.

Assessment, placement recommendations and instructional consultations are available.

The ESOL program complies with the New York State Education Department’s Program for Education of Limited English Proficient Students and assists districts with the preparation and implementation of the CR 154.
