Speech, Language and Audiology
Overview Speech-Language and Audiology Department offers a comprehensive support service to students from preschool to 21 years of age. This comprehensive service includes the identification, diagnosis, and ongoing evaluation and monitoring of students with speech, language, and hearing disorders that interfere with communication and educational development. Habilitative and rehabilitative programs are planned, directed and provided to establish or restore communication effectiveness. Services are provided to students in small groups, individually and/or within classroom settings. Speech-Language and Audiology staff are members of educational teams within buildings and programs. As a member of the educational team, they respond to referrals for diagnosis and service, provide information and opinions regarding the educational needs of particular students, and participate in the development of information presented to the Committees on Special Education. Speech-Language Evaluation – This includes testing to address needs involving: articulation, receptive/expressive language, voice, oral motor skills, fluency, and feeding skills.
Speech-Language Pathology Student Services – This includes individual or small group intervention per session.
Speech-Language Pathology Consultation in Program Management – This service provides consultation services relative to service delivery models, caseload management planning, regulation pertaining to profession-specific practice.
Speech-Language Pathology Staff Supervision – This includes supervision to satisfy ‘under the direction of’ for Medicaid reimbursement.
Central Auditory Processing Evaluation – This service is a comprehensive evaluation by an educational audiologist and speech language pathologist to asses students listening skills and ability to process auditory information
Central Auditory Processing School Consultation – This service assists teachers in determining how a student handles auditory processing and listening tasks in the classroom.This may include record review, test interpretation, and/or development or implementation of strategies that that have been recommended.
Audiological Evaluations – This may include acuity testing, diagnostic typanometry, otoacustic emission testing for difficult to asses populations and aural rehabilitation.
FM/Assistive Listening System Case Review/Consultation – This consultation service is designed to assist education teams regarding decision making relative to purchasing, upgrading, or changing personal or classroom systems.
FM System Evaluation – This includes assessment of unaided and aided hearing, tests of middle ear functioning and testing to determine if an FM system is appropriate.
FM/Assistive Listening System Management Contract – This includes equipment procurement, inschool fitting, staff inservice including troubleshooting, service contracts and parts replacements, annual audiological evaluation and FM system evaluation conducted at Monroe 1 BOCES.
FM/Assistive Listening System Purchase – Monroe 1 BOCES purchases prescribed equipment and accessories. The school district is charged for the cost of the device and accessories.
The Office of Assistive Technology Services (OATS) provides consultation, evaluation, planning, purchasing, and training in the appropriate use of assistive technology for technology dependent students. OATS develops individual and organizational plans for the acquisition, use and maintenance of assistive and adaptive devises in special education. It coordinates the expertise of specialists in speech-language pathology, vision and mobility, occupational and physical therapy, hearing and computer software and hardware. OATS can assist in the development of district technology plans, develop recommendations for appropriate equipment and software, evaluate individual needs and equipment. Such equipment may include electronic organizers, spelling and grammar checkers, screen magnification software, augmentative and alternative communication software, telephone equipment software and alternative keyboards and input devices. - Consultation
