Distance Education Program Options
New York State certified Adult Education instructors assist enrolled students with selecting the program that works best.
ABE/HSE Distance Education Programs
These alternate pathways are designed for those motivated to earn their HSE, but unable to attend regular classroom sessions. Students should be able to commit to at least 6 hours per week of at-home study. Students learning at home also have access to tutoring support; see individual programs for details.
- SMART/GRASP are packet-based programs with curriculum designed for each student. Instructors send students a packet of work to complete every two weeks. Students are also eligible for up to 3 hours a week of tutoring from a certified instructor.
- Fast Track Math is a NYS Distance Education program specifically designed for those who need additional support on passing the GED Math subtest. Instructors send students a packet of work to complete every two weeks. Students are also eligible for up to 6 hours a week of tutoring from a certified instructor.
ESOL/ELL Distance Education Program
- Crossroads Café – Learn English at home! Crossroads Café is an exciting video program about real people working and living in the U.S.! Colorful Photo Stories and Worktexts make Crossroads Café an ideal program for practicing listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills, as well as learning about U.S. culture and workplace competencies. Students work at home to watch videos and complete packets, and they can also attend in person tutoring and support for up to 3 hours a week.

Determine your success
Completing a Distance Education program depends on being self-motivated and your ability to work independently.
Successful students:
- Commit to a regular study schedule of at least 12 hours every two weeks
- Complete assignments on a consistent basis
- Communicate regularly with instructors

Is Distance Education for you?
Distance Education programs provide adults 21 and older an alternative to the traditional classroom setting for earning a High School Equivalency diploma and/or learning English Language skills.
Students work independently under the guidance of a NYS Certified Adult Education instructor. Distance Education courses may include online assignments or work study packets.
Monroe One BOCES Adult Education can help you choose a Distance Education program that best suits your academic skills and schedule.
- All students must be 21 or older.
- Instruction and assessments are provided at no-cost to students.
- Enrollment is open throughout the year.
- An Orientation and Assessment Session are required before beginning the Distance Education Program. Students must possess minimum reading/math skills and have appropriate computer literacy and self study skill in order to be accepted into a program. The assessment is used for appropriate placement to ensure student success.
- All students must be 21 or older.
