Monroe One staff conference day focuses on employee wellness

On April 8, Monroe One BOCES faculty and staff participated in a professional development day unlike any other. This Superintendent's Conference Day spanned across five locations and offered over 100 sessions covering nearly 50 topics focused on health, wellness and self-care. Many of the sessions were offered by our own Monroe One staff.

“As a trauma-informed organization, we planned this year’s Superintendent’s Conference Day through the lens of caring for ourselves with the same commitment we show when caring for others,” said Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development Coordinator Danielle Conover.

“Our staff at Monroe One work with a very challenging population of students. They put their whole selves into caring for students and we recognized the need to allow our staff the opportunity to have a day for new learning and self-reflection with the hope that they will continue to take time to care for themselves," said Conover.

The day featured all kinds of sessions on meditation, mindfulness, stress-reduction and nutrition. Staff could get active during sessions that included volleyball, Zumba, yoga and self defense. They could explore their creativity in sessions including watercolor painting, gratitude journals and vision boards. Staff could seek guidance in their personal lives through workshops on home buying, fraud and identity theft and investment basics. Our EMCC cosmetology students also provided manicure and pedicure services for staff who were seeking a little pampering.

One of the location’s featured keynote speaker Alissa Parker, co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools and the mother of Emilie Parker, one of the 20 children who died tragically in the Sandy Hook School Shootings on December 14, 2012. Parker shares the inspiring way she has chosen to help school communities improve school safety in honor of her daughter and memory of the other 19 children and six teachers who lost their lives that day. Her perspective as a parent provides unique insight and inspiration for parents, administrators, school staff, emergency responders and community members who strive to make their schools safer.

A special thank you to all of our staff members who shared their talents with their peers!
