    Convert used cooking oils into useful biodiesel

    Students can explore how waste materials can be converted into useful products that offer both economic and ecological benefits with a series of hands-on classroom and laboratory activities. Students synthesize biodiesel from both pure and waste cooking oils. Then, they study the energy content of biodiesel by burning fuels using a home-made calorimeter and also examine the pollution caused by different fuels. Students also use hands-on experiments to investigate the properties such as density, viscosity and gelation temperature of different fuels to determine whether they can be used in Rochester winters.
