Waste to Energy

Waste to EnergyBioFuel

Convert used cooking oils into useful biodiesel

Students can explore how waste materials can be converted into useful products that offer both economic and ecological benefits with a series of hands-on classroom and laboratory activities. Students synthesize biodiesel from both pure and waste cooking oils. Then, they study the energy content of biodiesel by burning fuels using a home-made calorimeter and also examine the pollution caused by different fuels. Students also use hands-on experiments to investigate the properties such as density, viscosity and gelation temperature of different fuels to determine whether they can be used in Rochester winters.
