Cooking activities are planned once a week, usually on Fridays. Students are given the opportunity to plan healthy meals or snacks using the food plate which is the new initiative that used to be the food pyramid. They develop a shopping list based on a meal they have chosen and recipes. Students grocery shop for the meal learning many skills such as budgeting, comparison shopping, reading labels, unit pricing, adding the cost of groceries, paying for groceries and receiving change. They are then given the opportunity to cook the meal or snack learning about measurement, fractions, following a recipe, using kitchen appliances ( microwave, stove, oven, ....), cleaning up, cooperation and team work.
