Graduation requirements for students in New York State are being reviewed and revised.

The Board of Regents and State Education Department have been leading the conversation on creating the most meaningful diploma for students.

Monroe One BOCES has been a part of the discussion, recently hosting educators from the region along with Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. On Feb. 13, 2020 those educators came together to breakdown current guidelines and consider new avenues for student success.

This meeting was one of the first of many in the state to gather feedback on what a state diploma should signify to ensure educational excellence and equity for every student in New York State.

Timeline

• Phase I is currently underway, with a completion date of April 2020. During this time, there will be a review of research and practices in other states. The findings will be presented in Spring 2020. Meanwhile, regional workgroups will continue across the state to gather feedback.
  
  
• Phase II will begin in September 2020, with the creation of the Blue Ribbon Commission. The BRC will meet throughout the fall, along with sub-groups to create recommendations to be considered. This report is due between the fall of 2021 and the winter of 2022.
  
  
• Phase III is slated to start in Winter of 2022, with the Blue Ribbon Commission’s final report presented to the Board of Regents for consideration.
