Variant Influenza Virus (H3N2v)

    • Influenza viruses that normally circulate in pigs are called “variant” when they are found in people.
    • The first cases were reported in June 2013, and the CDC anticipates identifying more cases as the agricultural fair season continues.
    • CDC recommends avoiding exposure to pigs and swine barns at fairs, washing hands frequently if engaged with activities that involve swine contact, and seeking medical care for influenza-like symptoms following direct or close contact with pigs.
