Middle School Course Descriptions

Math 7 & 8

  • Emphasis:

Common core mathematical practices which include: perseverance in problem solving, reasoning, constructing and critiquing arguments, modeling with mathematics, using appropriate tools strategically, attending to precision, and making use of structure and patterns.

    Math 7

    2 hours per day/22 days

Students will develop an understanding of and apply proportional relationships, develop an understanding of operations with rational numbers and work with expressions and linear equations. Additionally, student will solve problems that involve scale drawings and informal geometric constructions and work with two- and three-dimensional shapes in order to solve problems involving area, surface area and volume.

    Math 8

    2 hours per day/22 days

Students will develop an understanding of formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling real-world relationships with linear equations and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations. Additionally, students will work to grasp the concept of a function and use functions to describe quantitative relationships. Students will be taught to analyze two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, congruence, and understand the application of the Pythagorean Theorem.

ELA 7 & 8

  • Emphasis:

Identify key ideas and details, understanding craft and structure, integration of knowledge and, explore a range of reading and text variety.

Understanding text types and purpose for writing, production (revision) of writing pieces, active research to build upon knowledge and understand the range of writing.

    Speaking and Listening:
Being able to listen to a speaker, collaborate with peers, presentation of knowledge and Ideas.

    Language Development:
Development of conventions, knowledge of language and vocabulary acquisition and use.

    English 7 and English 8

    2 hours per day/22 days

Students will focus on developing 21st Century English Language Arts skills and will participate in project-based learning. The specific skills that will be targeted are: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Teachers will challenge students with a theme and all activities throughout the session will stem from that focus. Students will produce a portfolio that reflects their growth. The portfolio will include a pre and post essay on the theme, as well as an array of assignments.

  • In lieu of grades, middle school students will receive progress reports, which are standards based.
