  • Structuring Support for the Students and Staff of Monroe #1 BOCES

An Introduction to Monroe #1 BOCES Trauma, Illness, Grief Team

The loss or serious illness of a student, colleague or loved one is a sad and difficult time. At these times, there is always an opportunity for creating a meaningful experience and helping grieve the loss. The Trauma, Illness, and Grief (TIG) team at Monroe #1 BOCES is in place to address this need throughout the organization and local school communities. TIG has been established to help students, staff, and all members of the Monroe # 1 BOCES family to cope with traumatic events.

TIG is a Monroe County-wide effort involving schools and local community agencies. All Monroe County school districts participate in, and cooperate through, The Consortium on Trauma, Illness and Grief in Schools, the organization providing training and resources to districts. As stated in its charter, the goal of TIG is, “to provide preventive and crisis support; to prepare our schools and districts to have appropriate mental health support in place when they must respond to events involving trauma, violence, illness and death.”

At Monroe #1 BOCES, we believe in this effort to provide emotional support for students and staff when it is needed most. When called upon, TIG members rely on their extensive training to help support and guide the school community through the aftermath of a critical event. That support may include: identifying needs and processing feelings with the students, interfacing with staff, communicating information, assessing interventions and accessing resources. TIG also supports the School Safety and Crisis Response Teams for the planning of preventative efforts and effective crisis responses at the school level. Through collaboration with any of our programs or departments, TIG will respond to help those impacted by acute trauma to build resiliency and have the support needed to return to their productive school and personal lives.
